Xuan Huy – Humans of Maha

Huy came to Maha Mangala through a chance encounter, at a time when everything still felt uncertain after the Covid-19 pandemic. At that moment, he had little sense of what Maha Mangala was — he simply wanted to open himself to a new opportunity during the interview, to see if he was a good fit. But from the very first encounter, what seemed “unfamiliar” in this seemingly “enclosed” space planted in him a completely different feeling… one of peace, gentleness, and an unexpectedly close sense of belonging.

On his first day, he met master in the zen garden. The afternoon light, a relaxed smile, and a simple question: “You’ve just arrived?”
That moment made him feel a sense of belonging — not as a new member, but as an invitation to step into a new way of life, from which the journey of “returning” began.

In the early days, practicing “walk lightly, speak softly” left him somewhat puzzled, and at times Master would gently remind him: “Slow down, guy.” But day by day, these small practices — mindfulness, awareness of the breath — gradually replaced old habits. From the work behind the kitchen to moments he came to cherish, like the Bell Ritual or burning sage, he realized that he was slowly cultivating a kind of “faith” — not one to be sought elsewhere, but a trust in the life that blossoms within himself.

Bếp Mani Kitchen became the place where this continued to grow. Before each meal, the Gratitude Chant acted like a silent mirror, reminding him to pause and give thanks. Not only did he return to his own peace and inherent sense of gratitude, but he also began to share it with new connections — right there in Bếp Mani Kitchen and through the gatherings that followed.

Some say that time changes a person. But for Huy, it was not a change into someone else, but a return — a return to the good, the wholesome, the natural that had always existed within. What he cherished most at Maha Mangala was not a new skill, but a way of living… one that is calmer, steadier, and truer.

His journey of “returning” began with the smallest of things, yet they were enough to illuminate an entire life — from people radiating genuine peace, nurtured each day and blooming in every moment.

Maha Mangala – Return to uphold life in our hands.
